At Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) we really believe in giving young workers the best possible start to their career, which is why it brings me great joy to announce our 2022 Annual Apprentice intake.
In the 15-plus year history of the apprenticeship program, the 2022 intake is one of our largest to date, with 15 bright and talented individuals being integrated into this four-year forklift technician initiative.
The competition for the 15 spots was incredibly fierce, with selection from a field of roughly 875 applicants – showing the obvious appeal of this comprehensive apprenticeship program.
This fantastic in-house grassroots initiative fosters the development of in-demand skills, providing our new apprentices with not just valuable expertise, but the opportunity to grow their careers within the TMHA organisation.
We hosted the new apprentices at the Rydges of Campbelltown hotel, with a casual dinner attended by executives that allowed us to get to know the apprentices and find out more about why they want to be a TMHA technician.
Accompanied by their mentors, our 15 new employees were inducted in an April 21 ceremony at the TMHA Customer Experience Centre in Moorebank, NSW – it is always a proud moment being on hand to welcome the newest members of our team and educate them on Toyota’s history, values and expectations.
After a lunch and tour of the headquarters, TMHA President and CEO Steve Takacs – who actually started his career as a TMHA forklift technician, showing the scope for growth in our company – presented the apprentices with their tools of the trade, which represents a significant investment in our newest team members.
Our 15 apprentices will be distributed across the country to TMHA sites in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth, as well as our branches in Albury, Launceston and Gladstone, where they will receive thorough and well-rounded training with supervision from skilled mentors. We make sure they are cycled through every aspect of the service business to ensure they have a truly holistic educational experience.
We also help support our apprentices through their TAFE schooling over a four-year period.
From there, they can grow their career and branch out into the business – we have had apprentices go on to become service managers, branch managers, sales managers; the possibilities are endless.
A testament to the success of the program, the retention rate of our apprentices upon graduating is around 10-15 per cent higher than the national average.
Our Annual Apprentice Intake is a crucially important part of our business, and I can’t wait to see the progression of our 15 new apprentices as they go from strength to strength.
